The Weave of the Vortagion

Preface
The Weave of the Vortagion is a living document. It is not solely the outline of our beliefs but the name we give to the example we set as well. Just as the individual threads of a tapestry combine to produce a work that is greater than the sum of its parts, so too do the Threads of the Weave bind together the separate entities of the Lynk into something greater than the sum of its parts. The strength of a singular thread is negligent, but woven together as a whole we cannot be torn asunder. The respect and power of the Vortagion comes from the example that we live. We do not look down upon those who disagree or are disinterested in our chosen path. We aspire to better our skills, but we do not claim to be better individuals. What we seek are those who believe that there is a higher order within the game, that there is an art to perfect within the hobby. The Vortagion is that higher road, and the Threads of our Weave guide us on our journey.

The Threads
The order of the individual threads of the Weave is not important. As in most things, the qualities mentioned are of an interconnected nature; building upon and reinforcing each other. The Vortagion does not seek to close doors, but to open horizons. The Threads are not intended to be a cookie cutter approach to producing our vision of a quality gamer. Indeed, since our greatest strength lies within the diversity of vision inherent in role-playing, to advocate a universal approach to quality role-playing would be ultimately foolish. Pursuant to this goal, then, a gamer should not limit him or herself merely to the Threads, but strive to cultivate all manner of knowledge and honor.

Connect with your character
At some point, on some level, a gamer should connect with his or her character. Whether it be love, hate, respect, derision, or whatnot; there must be an emotional link between the two. Why else would a gamer desire to dress up in a character's skin and wander around in it for six hours at a time? The connection between gamer and character must be one way, to maintain the balance between fantasy and reality. But without it, a character is merely words on a piece of paper, not a breathing entity.

Earn the respect of your fellow players
The principle here is very basic and timeless; that to earn respect one must first give it, and that to have people aspire to an example, one must first live that example. A gamer seeks to treat his or her fellow players with respect such that he or she will earn their respect. Likewise, a gamer lives the Threads of the Weave in order to demonstrate the values of the Vortagion, in order to inspire others that they too should aspire to a higher level.

Be versatile in roleplaying
It would be foolish to attempt to judge a gemstone by a single facet of its cut. Similarly, any claim to being a roleplayer without knowledge of more than one roleplaying game would be foolish. A gamer samples from as many systems as possible, gleaning from each the knowledge of what works well and what does not work at all. This knowledge creates a power base from which a gamer can draw to speak authoritatively on his or her chosen hobby. Such versatility hearkens back to the ideal of the Renaissance individual; a person who is learned in a variety of different arts.

Choose a personal game
It is not enough that a gamer be able to navigate through a majority of the role-playing systems in publication; additionally each member of the Vortagion should work towards becoming proficient in a game of his or her own choosing. Not only will this maximize the use of our resources, but it also codifies the source of the Vortagion's interpretations of rules in each game. A gamer who's knowledge of game rules bring a clarity to any discussion will be designated as an Optic, and will be treated with due respect.

Strive for excellence
The devil is in the details. It is the small things that have always made a difference. A game worth playing is worth playing well. Pay attention to detail and do not cut any corners. It's not necessary to be pathological about things, but the margin between the simple and the excellent is narrow and weighed solely in the extra effort it takes to dot each i and cross each t.

Honor the traditions
Unwritten as they are, certain traditions exist inside the role-playing community. A gamer's career begins with Dungeons & Dragons or AD&D, and moves from there onto more sophisticated and diverse games. The evolution continues as gamers attend local conventions at first, and then move onto large regional cons as well as Gen Con. This archetypal generation gives gamers something of a common history, the ability to immediately connect with the experiences of other gamers. It is important to give the past its due, because all of history repeats itself. Those who are not mindful of its lessons are doomed to repeat them.

Judge from experience
For a great part self-explanatory, simply put, a gamer does not prize or devalue a game based on anything other than personal experience.

Cultivate personal honor
In a large part something that is lacking from our society is a sense of personal honor. Without exploring too deeply the aspects and nuances of such an all-encompassing stature, the personal honor sought by the Vortagion is that of honesty and integrity. A gamer's word should be his or her bond, it should carry the weight and respect of his or her reputation. It should not be treated nor given lightly. Do not be late. Don't ever be late. It shows disrespect.

Mission of the Vortagion
We live the Threads of the Weave to set an example, that by aspiring to role- play to the best of our abilities we elevate a simple hobby into an art. Beyond that, the Vortagion is tasked with protection and regulation of the regular bodies of the Lynk. Membership in the Vortagion is a privilege, not a right, and it is earned through personal adoption of the Threads of the Weave. Only an Anactos or higher may name new members to the Vortagion.

Conclusion
In the beginning, only a dream of the Vortagion existed, a fragile hope that among the smoke and mirrors of the CCGs we could find individuals dedicated to the same principles. In the years that have followed, through small steps and refinements, we have tempered our dream into a reality of steel and desire. We know, now, that others out there have heard the same siren call as we have. All that remains is to unite them beneath our banner and herald the coming of a new darkness.
